Here are 11 tips to not just survive but thrive in life’s twists and turns
1. Acknowledge Your Feelings
So, let’s start by being honest about how we’re feeling. Anxious? Excited? Maybe a bit of both? Totally normal. Consider jotting down your thoughts in a journal or chatting with your trusted person. Recognizing your emotions is the first move in handling them.
Action Step: Grab a notebook or open a new doc on your phone. Spend 5 minutes writing about what you’re feeling regarding the change. Don’t edit yourself—let it all out. This simple act can help you process emotions and reduce overwhelm.
2. Stay Present
Worrying about what tomorrow holds? Same here. But, focusing on the now can seriously dial down the stress. Mindfulness can be as simple as taking a deep breath or enjoying the heck out of your morning coffee. Be here, now, and watch the stress simmer down.
Action Step: Try practicing mindfulness every day! Begin with a quick 2-minute breathing exercise in the morning. Inhale deeply for a count of four, hold for four, exhale for four, and hold again for four. This short pause can help center you in the present moment, reducing worries about what’s ahead.
3. Establish a Routine and a Strategy
When the world feels like it’s spinning, a solid daily routine can be your anchor. Whether it’s a morning run, a nightly skincare ritual, or Taco Tuesdays, find those little constants that keep you grounded.
Action Step: Jot down three things you won’t compromise on in your daily routine. Maybe it’s a morning stretch, reading before bed, or fixing up a healthy breakfast. Keep at these to feel grounded and on top of things. But remember the goal is also to build flexibility and while holding stabilitiy down. Writing out a strategy of how your going to move through things will help you sooo much.
4. Take Small Steps
Facing a big change? Break it down. Setting small, manageable goals makes the whole “embracing change” thing less daunting. Plus, ticking off those little wins? Super satisfying.
Action Step: Break down your big change into bite-sized goals. Strategies can be your amour. If you’re looking for a job, maybe today’s goal is just updating your resume. Tomorrow, you could reach out to your network. Remember, small steps lead to big progress!
5. Lean on Your Support
We’re social creatures, folks. Sharing worries or bouncing ideas off friends, family, or even a support group can lighten the load. Don’t underestimate the power of a good heart-to-heart.
Action Step: Identify at least two people in your life you can talk to openly. Make a point to check in with them weekly. Planning a heart-to-heart get together can shift your mindset drastically. Sharing your journey can lighten your load and might offer new perspectives to give you more room for growth and improvement.
6. Focus on What You Can Control
Spoiler alert: We can’t control everything. Shocking, I know. Instead of fretting over the uncontrollable, channel your energy into what you can influence—like your attitude, your kindness, and yes, your Netflix queue.
Action Step: Create two lists – one for things you can control and one for things you can’t. When you’re feeling stressed, take a look at these lists. Focus on what you can do from the first list, and work on letting go of the second one.
You can add in affirmations to your coping strategies, I love these and trust me they help when it comes to mindset.
7. Embrace Lifelong Learning when navigating change
Change often forces us to adapt and learn. View it as an opportunity to grow. Wanted to take up coding? Now’s your chance. Embracing a learner’s mindset makes change exciting, not scary.
Action Step: Think about one skill or topic that fits with the changes you’re going through. Spend around 30 minutes a week digging into it – could be through books, online courses, or podcasts. It’ll boost your confidence and make you feel like adaptation is second nature.
8. Practice Self-Care
Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and face masks (though, highly recommend both). It’s also about nourishing your body, mind, and soul. Eat well, move your body, and do things that make you feel good inside and out.
Action Step: Slot in a bit of self-care each day, like a quick 15-minute walk or switching off your phone an hour before bed. Taking care of yourself regularly really helps you bounce back stronger and bulid your resilience up!
Finding quotes that resonate with you a soul deep level is a form of self care too.
9. Find Humor and Joy
Ever noticed how finding the funny side of a tough situation can make it feel a tad lighter? Laughter really can be the best medicine. So, watch that comedy, share that meme, and let joy be your rebellion against the chaos.
Action Step: Why not commit to doing one thing every day that makes you laugh or smile? It could be watching a funny video, playing with your pet, or dancing to your favorite song.
It really boosts your mood and helps reduce stress! Shifting your mood and overcoming the bodily effects of anxiety sets the stage for so much more growth.
10. Reflect on Past Successes
Remember that time you thought you couldn’t do the thing, and then you did? You’ve navigated change before, and you can do it again. Remind yourself of your resilience. You’re stronger than you think.
Action Step: Let’s try creating a success journal! Adding this to your strategy can help kick your mindset back into helping you instead of hindering you.
Pick a weekly challenge you conquered, jot down how you did it, and revisit it when you need a confidence pick-me-up. It’s a great way to remind yourself of your own resilience and flexibility.
11. Seek Professional Help When Needed
Sometimes, we need a bit more than a pep talk from our bestie. And that’s okay. Reaching out to a counselor or therapist can provide the tools and perspective we need to handle change like a pro.
Action Step: Look into therapists or counselors who focus on things that relate to what you’re going through. Lots of them give free first chats. It can really help to get personalized tips for handling change and moving forward.
Change and uncertainty can feel overwhelming, right? But hey, they’re also doors to growth and new adventures! So, learn how to handle life’s twists with a touch more grace and way less stress!
Practice the ‘Hand to Heart’ Exercise
Again I’m not a licensed therapist or counselor, but I’ve found this exercise super helpful and thought you might like it too. Sometimes the simplest things can have a big impact on stress levels.
One of my favorites is the ‘Hand to Heart’ exercise—it’s a really easy way to calm your nerves. Showing yourself some kindness with this gesture can help center your thoughts, bring peace, and remind you that we’re all in this together.
Quick Hand to Heart Mindfulness Exercise
1. Find a Quiet Spot: Sit or stand in a place where you can be undisturbed for a few minutes.
2. Breathe: Close your eyes. Take three deep breaths—inhale slowly through your nose, then exhale through your mouth, letting go of tension.
3. Hand to Heart: Place one hand on your heart. Feel its warmth and heartbeat. If comfortable, place your other hand on your abdomen.
4. Connect and Visualize: As you breathe deeply, imagine drawing in calmness with each inhale and releasing stress with each exhale. Feel the connection to your inner strength.
5. Offer Kindness: Silently tell yourself a comforting phrase like, “I am strong,” or “I navigate change with ease.”
6. Return Gently: After a minute or so, when you’re ready, lower your hands and open your eyes slowly. Take a moment to notice how you feel.
Tips for Daily Practice
